The Importance of Daily Reading
Whether you are a seasoned believer or an infant in your relationship with the Lord, a Biblical foundation must be laid daily. A fresh slab should be poured every morning; it will set the course of your day. If you neglect this duty and hastily go about your business, you will find that you can become easily overwhelmed by the slightest adversity. A daily scripture verse as part of your morning routine gives you an anchoring point, and a healthier attitude toward the struggles you may encounter that day.
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25)
How to Use Your Daily Scripture Verse
There is no outlined method of reading the Bible. You do not have to check off boxes to engage God’s Word or to have a meaningful moment with the Lord. Bible reading is about intent. Being deliberate about spending time in the Bible opens the door of your heart and mind to be receptive to what you are reading.
With so much content, the most difficult part is where to begin. This is especially difficult for new Christians. A few of the methods many God seekers use are:
Daily Devotions – These can be found everywhere. From a daily scripture verse newsletter to social media pages, to printed devotional materials, like “Our Daily Bread.” These give you a scripture passage and an encouraging commentary regarding that verse.
Reading Cover to Cover – There are some who enjoy reading a book from beginning to end. There are many outlines available that aid readers in reading through the Bible in a Year. You can also just read, taking it at your own pace. Remember, it is about intent, not content.
Topical Study – Some Bibles will have sections that will list topics and corresponding verses that are aligned with that topic. “Are you feeling lonely? Read Joshua 1:5,” or “Creation: Read Genesis 1-2.” Bible apps available for smartphones are loaded with these types of topical listings.
Open, Point, and Read – One method some use is simply randomly opening the Bible and begin to read wherever page they open to. The thought behind this is that wherever the Bible lands, that is the daily scripture verse that God has directed them to read.
What is imperative is finding a method that works for you and sticking with it. Fill yourself with His Word and use what you learn to guide your day. It is good to remember that the Bible teaches us to be more than hearers of the Word; it encourages us to be doers of the Word.
“But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:25)
While again, there is no outline to how, where, or when you read your Bible, it is widely believed that the start of your day is the most important time to devote to reading. A person’s mood is affected by what happens to them in the morning. If you spill your coffee, the kids are acting up, or that guy cuts you off, those events set you on edge and can put you in a bad mood that lasts all day.
However, just as one negative event can affect your entire day, one positive and encouraging moment can have a positive effect on your demeanor and adversity tolerance levels. Take your dose of daily scripture verse, and you place your foundation on the Rock. Not only will you feel better, but others will take notice. That opens the door to sharing the Gospel with others and discussing what God is doing in your life. Your experiences allow them a glimpse of the benefits of what a daily scripture verse can do for them, as it has done for you.
