Lord teach us to pray
Luke11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. Let us read also: John4:21-24 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father, But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him, Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
I will not take a time over this conversation between Jesus and Samaritan woman but allow me to take this message about The worship that our father is praised with. Here Jesus and the Samaritan woman used this known word Worship where God is concerned (Who he is, his attributes, etc..) And in Prayer which is our main concern much focus is on our self or creatures interest element. So, A good prayer can lead someone to worship God by knowing his character in order to ask him what you want according to his will.
?? But for now allow me to combine both as prayer and go closer to our Lord as his disciples and ask him to teach us how to pray before we go to the prayer of the Lord to see who and how to approach God in prayer.
Let me highlight this word: For the father sekeeth such to worship him
??This is clear that, all who pray is not praying according to the father's will, that is why we also need to kneel down before the Master teacher and ask him to teach us how to pray, when we read Matthew Chapter 6 from verse 5 we can see how Jesus was a master teacher as he once said:
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. Luke5:37
To put a new wine into the old wineskins is like putting a clean water for drinking in a unclean cup,
??We have to remove our old fought and our old way of doing things as long as it does not please God to receive a new one.
??That is why Jesus started by telling them how to behave in order to pray God because in their time people were praying to show how eloquent they are or how many days they can pray.
From this he commanded them:
??Not to pray in order to show. (With the intention to be known or to be respected according to your ability to pray)
??Not to use empty words: (We have to pray with our conscious awakened for us to talk to our God effectively, not only talking), Etc...
Now, after this cleaning of their mind on how things used to be,
He taught them how to do so.
Psalm62:12 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God,
Allow me to say as this Psalmist that Jesus has spoken once and I heard twice because even if this prayer of the Lord can be counted as a normal prayer by many, it is also a teaching as he was requested. From it, we can learn what is essential in our prayers as when a builder of the house is reading a drawing to know how to build according to the owner's wish. This is also our masterplan about how to pray our father in heaven.
Let us see 8 Pillars that Jesus has put for us in order to pray according to the father's will
1. Our father in heaven:
Jesus want us to approach God as our own father not as someone of elsewhere.
For us to call God our father, it is clear that one is a born again Christian because who has believed Jesus as his savior and then repent his sins and continue in searching form his Holy Spirit guidance. This is the only way one can make God his father.
And then this relationship is our main reason to pray; In our time many people are approaching God because of having problems or earthly blessings.
But for us; As a Child to his father our Heavenly father don't want us to approach him with the same mindset because God is our father in all times and he is waiting for us to go to him to take his instructions on how to praise him, And also he always wait for us to bless us in all.
Again to keep this relationship we also have to go closer to him as the Psalmist said:
For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. Psalms 73:27-28
Many People thought that praying is a sign of poverty, weakness, etc...]
??It is true on one side but our poverty is as Jesus said “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. not as many think that it is a worldly wealth that push us to pray.
But our reason of praying are more Spiritual than material reasons
We approach God as a father and learn from him how to behave as a his children, That is also one of the Spiritual importance of prayer: To have God's character as his children.
Let us pray our God as our father and keep our relationship closer and stronger by prayer
It will even be easy to cry for his help in a needed time because where relationship is created everything goes smoothly.
2. Hallowed be your name
Jesus taught us to pray God with his honor in our mind.
As our approach to God is as a child to the father we have to know also that our God is honorable so that we will not missuse the first opportunity by becoming familiar with him in a bad way. A prayerful man is shown by his life that reflect the Glory of the Almighty God by bearing the fruit of the Holy Sprit. Our praying level is not measured on how many days one can fast or how much word he can speak in a time only, But also by how much respectfully your life is toward God by being obedient to his word. We Honor God by obeying his instructions in whatever we do; either in his service or in our daily life.
When we pray God according to his will, our obedient level goes higher because a prayer is a weapon that can change one's mind
And we all know better that a prayer can change even your enemies mind as to Mordecai with king Ahasuerus when Haman was planning to kill him.
??In the same way our prayer is a good weapon that God use to change us from disobedience to obedience to him which is our main calling.
Let us exalt God by our hearts in our life and then by our songs and prayers because that is what please our Father.
3. Your kingdom come.
Our Lord also wants us to pray God with his kingdom in our mind.
Paul says about this kingdom as this: For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans14:17
As we are praying we was taught to call upon God's righteousness, God's peace and God's Joy that can be found no where else except in The Holy Spirit.
Where the kingdom of God is, God is on the center of all decision rather than our selves, That is why we need Jesus to teach us how to pray by our life style not only by our words,
Because our God is able to read our minds and know if we really mean what we say, And when what we say is different from what we mean it becomes hypocrisy which is one of the things God hate more. As we are calling upon his kingdom to come dawn we also have to receive it.
Let us pray with God's kingdom in hearts.
4. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Another thing taught by our Lord is that:
Our prayer align us to the will of God than pushing God to do our will.
The same standard that is in heaven is also the same that has to guide us in this world
When he was about to be crucified, Jesus prayed our father to move the suffering cup from him; As he was praying; he added that only the will of God is the one to be followed.
This will of God was about our salvation; That is why God instead of removing the cup on his way, he sent an angel to make him Strong and he was able to fulfill the writings about him.
The same to us, The prayer can not remove all the mountains in front of us,
Some of them we need to climb them up to the top and then from there we will be able to look down and praise God for what he has done.
In doing so, Even the world will know that our behavior in temptations is difference from theirs and some of them can be changed by only that.
I remember one brother who told us this quote: The weight of everything is proved by wind
??When there is no wind a plastic is as a stone until when the wind comes to prove it's weakness.
That is why we need a holy Spirit guidance to know what is the will of God in what we are passing through and know how to fight Spiritual fighting.
God can allow us to be tempted:
??To teach us and show us how weak we are in order to request power from him.
??To teach others from our temptations and us also,
??To exalt his name within our suffering.
That is why Jacob said:
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Jacob1:12
As all of us can agree that It was good for Jesus to drink the cup for us to get salvation, The same as I said before, We have to be willing to pass through God's test and become more perfect as a gold from fire.
Let us ask our Lord to teach us how to endure temptations as himself has done when it is from our God'is will.
As we can see in these 4 points above, Jesus insist on our relationship to God
??We have to approach him as his children,
??Obeying his name,
??Calling, receiving and showing his kingdom in us,
??Doing his will and requesting for it.
5. Give us this day our daily bread
Our God is also concerned with our well being as a father to a child.
Jesus summarized all of our physical needs With the main one which is our daily read.
??Our father knows that we need physical food,
??He also knows that we need clothes, houses, etc...
He promised as that if we will look after his kingdom and his righteousness first (as our priority) other things will be added to us.
??Let us trust in him because he is a promise keeping God.
Whatever you asked to him trust that he is willing to provide within his time as Peter saidvcasting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
1Peter5:7vOur heavenly father is a careering father to both Spiritual and Physical needs of his children
6. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
As we pray, our master also taught us to pray with a heart ready to repent and to forgive others also.
A prayerful man is someone who knows better the value of God's forgiveness and then learn from him how to forgive others also, As Mathew was writing to Jews he used a language that can be understood by them;
??It was said in old times to pay bad to bad. (Teeth by teeth); It is clear that if in the old testament some one has done a bad thing was owing a debt to you. (Needed to be payed back)
As Jesus was teaching he taught us to forgive and leave those kind of debts as God did for us when he forgave all our sins.
As we are here, Let us forgive those who refused to pay school fees for us, those who refused to take us in their vehicles, etc...
Pray with a heart willing to forgive others and also willing to repent from them and from God also. And this not an easy topic to Jesus as he rater mentioned it as a must for us to be forgiven when he said: but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
7. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
As we are praying we also have to know that our tempter is still working, So Don't be ignorant
Many people when praying or after prayer they like to behave as if the war is over;
Brethren; let me say this:
When you have shouted to your enemy camp, it is good to watch because there must be reaction.
Jesus himself was tempted after 40days of fasting.
Imagine if he was not watching against Satan's temptation. The same way let us be wise enough and not be arrogant on how much we are able to pray or ignorant to our enemy, We will be able to finish well.
That is why as we are praying we have also to watch and ask God to watch over us because, we are still in war where if you are not watching enough you can loose everything, Let us consider this advice and be watchful in all days:
And the king of Israel answered, “Tell him, 'Let not him who straps on his armor boast himself as he who takes it off.’” 1King20:11
After your praying time:
??Keep on praying,
??Stay in the word,
??Don't be pride but humble yourself before the Lord who enabled you to pray.
8. For yours is the kingdom, power and Glory, forever and ever. Amen
At the end of every cession of your prayer you have to trust in God you have prayed
This three things that our Lord revealed to us about God and he has put then to the end of his lesson about praying is a proof that God is able to hear and act according to what we have asked.
As we are praying let us trust the God we are praying and pray a prayer from inside our hearts;
This will make our relationship with our God closer and we will be able to pray out of faith not out of fear as some can do.
Our God is able to do anything within one second of time, Let us trust in him before and after our prayer, he will make us to live a life full of joy and hope from above.
Whatever you have prayed for; Trust and wait for God, One day you will see it coming to you miraculously.
As I finish let conclude with this Biblical verse??
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 1John5:14
Let us pray??
Father in the heaven,
We are humbly coming to you to teach how to pray a wonderful prayers in sight so that you can be praised by our life style and as well as our prayers in all the time.
Teach us to approach you every minute of our life us you are available to hear from us, Teach us also to be available to hear from you so that we can know your will and put it into practice in Jesus name we pray.
